What goes on the board

Road trip bingo is the classic look-out-the-window game: the board is full of things you pass on a drive, and you tap each one as you spot it. The built-in board comes loaded with the reliable sightings, a cow in a field, a red barn, a water tower, a windmill, a hot air balloon, a train, a bridge, a big rig, a rest stop.

The trick is a good mix. Stack it with easy finds you will see every hour (a billboard, a gas station, a road sign) and a few rarer ones that get a real cheer (a hot air balloon, a wind turbine, a horse, a rainbow).

Want to make it yours? Add your own squares for the stuff that happens inside the car, not just outside it: someone asks how much longer, a snack hits the floor, the playlist argument, the wrong-turn recovery. Mix the scenery with your family's greatest hits and the board plays like your trip.

Swap the five letters across the top from BINGO to MILES, ROADS, or TRIPS, and set the free square to something guaranteed, like the first gas station. Everyone plays on their phone, synced as the car rolls, so there is nothing to pass around the back seat.

How to play road trip bingo

The road hands you the squares; you just have to spot them first. Here is the flow.

1. Build the board. Start with the ready-made road trip board or fill it with what your route will serve up: cows, barns, water towers, an out-of-nowhere hot air balloon, a train running alongside the highway.

2. Share the link before you pull out. Everyone joins on their own phone. Nothing to lose under a seat by mile fifty.

3. Mark squares as the miles go. Someone spots a windmill. A red barn slides by. A big rig blasts past. First to call it gets the square, so it pays to keep your eyes up.

4. First to five in a row calls bingo, and the screen throws a little confetti. Long hauls can play to a full card instead. First to bingo picks the next snack stop.

The board should be live before you back out of the driveway; the road-trip setup takes one stoplight.

A few tips for a long drive

A few things that make it play better on a real trip:

Start it in the first few miles while everyone is fresh and the scenery is rolling by. Stack the board with common sightings so the game keeps moving, and save a couple of rare ones, a hot air balloon, a wind turbine, a horse, for the big reactions.

Mix in the in-car stuff if you have kids: someone asks are we there yet, a dropped toy, a snack negotiation. Those happen on schedule and keep everyone in it between sightings.

Let the driver play too, hands on the wheel, calling out what they see while everyone else taps. And if you are running two cars in a caravan, put both on the same board and let the rivalry carry you a few exits.

Rather hunt state license plates than scenery? That is its own game: license plate bingo turns all fifty states into the board.

Turn the drive into the fun part

A road trip does not have to be hours of staring at the interstate. The drive itself can be the fun part. Road trip bingo turns every wrong turn, snack emergency, scenic surprise, and passing cow into something worth tapping.

It works for a family haul to grandma's, a friends trip to the coast, a couple's weekend drive, or a full cross-country run. Everyone taps their own phone when they spot something, and the whole car is playing the same board.

Start with the built-in Road Trip board, add your group's habits and inside jokes, and share the link. Free, easy, and ready the moment the wheels start turning.
